As Vincent Granville from AnalyticBridge remarked, one of the next step and challenge to go further with bussiness analytics is to integrate all the inside data with the massive bunch of “outside” data to develop more complex and acurate models.

The idea of this icelandic starup it’s simple: they try to satisfy the current needs of information centralizing in one place data from many different sources. They present the data as time series and tables. They provide information from 14,000 data sets and have collected more then 100 million time series! Just as an example, have you ever asked if it’s true that in New Zeland they have more sheeps than humans?

It’s surprising that I’ve been so much time not knowing of its existence. It’s even more surpring the way it can look for the data you request and how can combine lots of different fonts to give you a great bunch of time series. The level of detail is also remarkable. For example, here we can observe the evolution of the apple trees since 2002 (in hectares) for the Golden and Fuji variety. In this case, the engine has also found 2 values for the input selection.

If this was not enough, they have develop an extremely quite simple system to integrate this glorious data-base into R for instance access to all their time series. With the new package rdatamarket, it’s trivially easy to import those time series into R for charting, analysis, or anything. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Register an account on DataMarket.com (it’s free)
2. Install the rdatamarket package in R withinstall.packages(“rdatamarket”)
3. Browse DataMarket.com for a time series of interest (I found this series on unemployment)
4. Copy the URL of the page you’re on (the short URL works too, I used “http://data.is/qb61uf”)
5. Use the dmseries function with the URL to extract the time series as a zoo object.

Lo primer que s’ha d’entendre és la diferència entre Android (de Google) i iPhone (de Apple). L’Android és un sistema operatiu mentre que iPhone és terminal i sistema operatiu. Què vol dir aquesta flipadeta? És exactament el mateix que passa amb els ordinadors: dir que vols un apple, saps que només podràs comprar ordenadors de la marca apple, mentre que si volem un “windows” tenim molts ordinadors diferents a elegir, marques, models i prestacions.

Un cop explicat això,

• iPhone: tenen una experiència d’usuari sublim, que us he de dir! Segurament no és pot disfrutar tant tocant un mòbil com amb un iPhone i ja se sap l’art que té Apple en fer que tots els seus productes faci goig de veure’ls. Tot funciona a la perfecció, no és solen penjar i tot el funcionament és molt intuitiu. Com van ser els primers,  són els que tenen el major nombre d’aplicacions disponibles (veure el gràfic adjunt). Què tenen de dolent aquestes bestietes? Doncs per mi algunes…En primer lloc, tot lo d’apple és molt bo, però també és fa pagar. Això no va únicament per el mòbil en sí (que ja és l’opció més cara) sinó per què les aplicacions també solen ser molt més de pagament que gratuites i els complements del mòbil també els solen cobrar bastant car. També cal dir que la integració és sempre més que perfecta entre aparells Apple, però si tens ordinadors normals o surts del seu cercle, les coses ja no funcionen tan bé.
• Android: com qualsevol producte de Google, els seus punts forts són que fan tot el que busques i més i a part sempre a preus molt assequibles. El sistema operatiu no és tan maco, però evoluciona molt més ràpid que iPhone i és nota que està molt ben pensat. No cal dir que si ets dels que usa productes de Google, la integració amb ells va de perles. Malgrat no té tantes aplicacions, cada cop creix més ràpid per la política més lliure de Google de deixar més aplicacions entrar a la seva app-store. Té moltes més aplicacions gratuïtes. Per altra banda, també té algunes contrapartides aquesta política. Com no fan ells el terminal (hardware) la integració a vegades falla i es penja el mòbil. No totes les aplicacions funcionen com haurien de funcionar per aquesta mateixa culpa. Remarco que això és un problema del fabricant del terminal (Motorola, Samsung, Sonny ericsson) més que del propi Android. Per això al comprar un terminal Android s’ha de tenir molt en compte el fabricant del mòbil i investigar sobre com de bé sol funcionar. també, com si d’un ordinador és tractés, tenir en compte les prestacions del mòbil (microprocessador, memòria,…)
• Blackberry: ha triomfat molt degut a lo còmode que era el teclat en pantalla (en contra del que pensaven molts fabricants!) i per cert efecte víric de marketing també curiós d’analitzar. Crec però que és un sistema operatiu que està destinat a desapareixer.
• Windows phone: fa relativament poc, Nokia (terminal) i Microsoft (sistema operatiu) s’han aliat per també fer la competència als anteriors. Personalment en desconec bastant els resultats que estan aconseguint, però crec que el mercat ja està molt agafat pels dos grans i se’m fa difícil creure coneixent Microsoft que puguin fer-se-hi un forat.

After such complexity and good results, it’s understandable that if they had done a good job, they diserve such a distinction of the OR world.

It’s incredible to watch comlex system and locate in them points where they can be optimized. The electrical supplyoing graph is just an extreme example, but everywhere there are lots of other systems that can also be optimized. Many of them work as “old manners” and nodes insist in doing evrything by their own instead of analyzing the problem as a hole.

They are going to make an experiment about distributed education with 3 free courses on Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Databases. They are online classes and will start on October 12 and end on December 16. As the teachers happily describe their courses will be much more like the ones we are used to: online videos, top questions live, practices and homework and even exams! They are completely organised and you can check the syllabus of the courses as well.

I love this stuff! But apart from the fact that I really like this topics and I think we all can take great advantage of it, let us take a moment to think on the iniciative in itself. Distributed education all around the globe. Share, I think the future of the world is going to towards a new philosophy of sharing culture. This is just another step in this direction. And what a big step!

Sempre que volem fer alguna cosa diferent ens topem amb mil i un NO’s d’amics, parents, professors, consellers,…. Sovint solen ser molt justificats i gens menyspreables. Jo no en deixo passa cap per alt. Però crec que és molt important tenir certa fermesa en el que un creu. Tots els consells són sempre molt benvinguts i ajuden molt, però no t’apartis del camí per què tothom pensi diferent. Si tots ens haguéssim apartat, potser encara pensaríem que la Terra es plana.Com a mi m’agrada molt la montanya, us ficaré una situació en la que em vaig trobar l’altre dia que em va fer pensar en el que us explico.

Fa poc vam anar fer un petit cim del Pirineu. En el punt de fer o no un pas complicat, un excursionista ens va aconsellar que no ho fessim, que no en podríem sortir. Que era una cresta molt aèria i que pendríem mal. Evidentment, en aquell moment, ens va entrar la por. Jo ja havia fet algunes crestes i, malgrat ser el punt on més disfruto d’una ascensió (poques vegades sento tan real i viu tot el que toco, veig o trepotjo com estan en un pas aèri), en aquell moment vaig posar en dubte tot el que sabia i vaig començar a pensar lo complicat que potser era on m’estava ficant. El meu cap, quasi com una maquina perfectament preparada per aquesta finalitat, va començar a generar-me un munt de situacions adverses i calabroses en les que em podria arribar a a trobar si no feia cas del consell d’aquell bon muntanyenc, malgrat saber que la cresta era assequible pel meu nivell.

Però ep! Parem el carro! Ho hem de tirar tot per terra per una opinió? No és tracta de fer temeritats i imprudències, sino de confiar amb lo que un coneix, amb lo que un és. S’han de prendre precaucions i fer les coses en calma. Tampoc es tracta d’engegar l’altre perillós motor contrari de voler-ho fer únicament per demostrar (davant d’un mateix o dels altres) que un n’és capaç. Però un cop clar, deixem-nos experimentar, provar, veure, mirar, tocar, continuar. I si ha d’arrivar, ja vindrà un punt en el que la muntanya ens digui prou.

Fiquem les coses en dubte. Siguem crítics amb el que veiem, sentim, ens diuen o ens ensenyen. Som persones i pensem, sentim. Donem-nos el plaer d’experimentar, de conèixer, de caure si cal (en sentit figurat, en el cas de la muntanya quasi millor que no si és vol arribar a casa i escriure-ho en un blog). Deixem-nos ser com els nens petits, us heu fixat amb quins ulls miren tot el que els envolta? Sembla que res els espanti!
